Is It Guidance or Just Their Way Of Manipulation?

The line between receiving feedback and being manipulated can be tricky to spot, but it’s important to learn the difference early in life. This skill will help you grow while staying true to yourself.

Feedback happens all the time, whether at work, in relationships, or just everyday situations. It can be positive or negative, but ultimately, it’s about people sharing their thoughts on your actions. How you choose to handle feedback is up to you. You either accept it, ignore it, or use it to grow. The choice is yours.

Manipulation, however, is a different ball game. When someone manipulates you, they’re not just offering their perspective, they’re trying to control or influence you for their own benefit. Manipulation often involves sneaky or deceptive tactics that can mess with your thoughts and feelings. It can range from guilt-tripping and criticism to fake flattery and comparisons meant to make you feel less.

Manipulative people might try to make you doubt yourself, take on more responsibilities than you should, or twist situations to fit their agenda. It’s usually about shifting your perception to their advantage.

So how do you protect yourself? Pay close attention to how people make you feel. If you’re consistently uncomfortable, anxious, or unsure around someone, it’s worth stepping back and re-evaluating your relationship with them.

Want to lower your chances of being manipulated? Here are a few self-checks:

– Do you feel a strong need to please others or avoid making them upset?

– Is there someone whose approval you crave above all else?

– Do you have trouble saying no, even when you really want to?

– Do you find yourself making excuses for someone’s questionable behavior?

– Are you stuck in a relationship that feels more harmful than healthy?

The key is learning to spot the patterns and protect your boundaries. Stay true to yourself, question motives when things feel off, and don’t let others control your narrative.

Take a moment to reflect. If any of this feels familiar, it’s time to pause and ask yourself, are you living on your own terms, or are you being steered by someone else’s hidden agenda? Trusting your instincts, setting boundaries, and standing firm in your own values aren’t just ways to protect yourself, they’re how you reclaim your power and write your own story.

In the end, only you decide what holds influence in your life. Choose wisely!
